That's a great story. When we were in school the military draft was still in place. I decided to take control of my own destiny by enlisting. I went to the Air force recruiter first because my father was in the AF during WW II. The waiting list was long so I went to the Navy recruiter where there was no wait list. I was told there were 2 year Navy reserve enlistments but again there was a list of people waiting. If I signed up for 4 years active and two as reserve I could go in right away. Now that I look back I think the recruiter was not completely honest as I found many new sailors that only had a two year active commitment. Too late by then so I just made the best of it. It turned out to be the best second choice I've ever made. No regrets
Thanks for sharing. Your service predates my own by a few years but I knew a few airdales that served on the Forrestal when it was homeported in Norfolk. Mostly Aviation Boatswains mates from the flight deck.
Welcome aboard Phillip. I'm glad you joined us. We'd love to hear some stories from your navy days
