  • After only a couple weeks, another AQB, Pat Hoover & I went to MATC school and then straight TAD to AIMD on the America.  We didn't get to meet many VA-85 shipmates in the mean time.  We were assigned to Shop 1 and only had contact with those guys and the SACE shop guys.  Occasionally met some of the Line Crew guys when they had unusual black box problems.  The only other contact was when we all mustered at Sick Bay for shots.  At NAS Oceana between cruises, we were also TAD to VA-42's AIMD.   Did you know Tom Barry & Pete something, they were the senior MATC techs at the time?

  • I

think you replaced me.  I was an AQB in VA-85 untill my dicharge in July of 1967. We were deployed on The Kittyhawk in 1965-66 and 66-67.  Welcome aboard.

  • Al, I was with VA-85 from Spring 1967 until April 1970 as an AQB in AIMD.  I made the 1968 & 1969-1970 WESTPAC deployments.  Are there any other AQ's from this period in your membership?   Mike Hazel

  • Several of us went on a beach detachment and spent a day or 2 at DaNang. Those few days count as boots on ground in RVN when it comes to agent orange claims. I have a copy of those orders. Some of the names are Swede, Jim Crow, & Jim Lively. Orders show April 4, 1970
  • If any of you are in touch with other former VA-85 personnel, I ask that you encourage them to join us here (VA-85) on NavyVets.  Also, I ask that if you, or others you're in contact with, are not on the Reunion Roster, message me so I can add you and others to it.  Thanks!

  • I served in VA-85 from May 1965 to December 1967 as an AT1 and then ATC.  I was a Weapons Systems Specialist and debriefer.  We deployed to SEAsia in 1965 and 1966 in the USS Kitty Hawk (CVA-63).  With my OMIAS Card I also had flights in the A-6A to fix the radios in X-C birds so they could return to NAS Oceana.

  • David....That box is definitely a keepsake!

  • Was VA-85's Disbursing clerk from 1975 - 1978. After my enlistment I attended Fort Hays State University, graduating in 1985 and have been teaching high school science ever since.  A lot of good memories from two Med cruises and living in Virginia Beach.  In 1976 the AO guys in the squadron painted an ammo box green and stenciled the squadron logo on the side, and I used it to carry pay records to and from the Forrestal.  I still have the box.

  • 6/9  went to see the blue angels in mankato, i'll never get tired of em

  • VA-85, Line Shack from 81-82.  Frank, I have A LOT of stories I could share...  LMBO
