USS Vulcan AR5
I was in her Pattern Shop 1957 to 1960.Keeping skills alive I learned in Class A Patternmakers school and three years on the Vulcan I have retired as a carpenter/cabinet maker and now make furniture and musical instruments.I tried teaching Industrial Arts, but found it wasn't my forte. Neither was teaching science. I just wanted to make things.I sure would like to reconnect with shipmates and old friends and find other PM's.I'd also like to find some info on my uncle Wiley J Taylor who talked…

Peter so good to here from you. I retired from AT&T and still am working in Telecommunications in NJ. I never did another pattern after the Navy but took the skills learned into carpentry and furniture making. Glad you are doing well and look forward to chatting it up on this website.
William Its good to here from you I remember all the great Volleyball lunch times we had. That school changed my life. I retired at 56 from Class "A" construction and living large in Southern California, but I think George had the better time building patterns and doing comshaw all his career. I did one pattern since I left the Navy in 77 and it was a fire door for a steam engine , for a local railroad museum. It brought back the best memories.
I was in the Patternmaker class with George Helman, Peter Brooks, Jeff Dozier, Jamie Hewlett that was pictured on George Helmans post back in December 2012 I'm the tall guy in the back row over George's left shoulder. I went to the Howard W, Gilmore AS16 in LaMadalina Sardina for one year and then spent rest of my enlistment in Charleston SC on the Sierra AD18. It's been forty years since we graduated anyout interseted in a reunion?
Paul I just read about Anderson do you have any idea what year that happened, I'm thinking that had to happen when the Markab was decommissioned. I'm not sure what the first classes name was that I worked for. He and I where the last two PM's to leave when she was being decomm. And I think he was heading to PM school and I was heading to Guam. never heard from him again.
Mike I had to make two Coffee Tables for two change of commands. Had to put all there ribbons and all the BS they received under glass, all I got out of it was to have a brass plate with my name and rank on it underneath it. no big deal i have a few pictures of them but i don't know how to scan them. Take Care Talk To You Soon, Bye the way, where you say you lived?
This was a project the Hunley did for an officer abt. 1970. Max was a DC, Dulin a PM1, Clem a FN, and Finely a DC3. The beer was an empty can.
Mike; Thanks For The Welcome Home,Same Too You!!!! We didn't get too many of those back in our days. Scotty was aboard the Proteus with me for about a year or so he was from Clear Lake CA. I can't remember where he went from the Proteus but I'm thinking it was one of the two Sub Tenders in San Diego. Scotty and I worked for a few months on building a jig so that we could build a few water skis which turned out fantastic, we were selling them on the side. The Proteus had a Yacht Club that I landed up running for a few years I taught Water Sking and Sailing to the Sub Sailors. It was a Great Job. If the USN would have given me that duty for 16 more years I would have stayed in. But they wouldn't so I got out and went into the Insurance Business. Take Care, Maybe someone might read this and put use in touch or at least tell Scotty that people are looking for him.
I've been using these Nav discussion boards, on and off, for about 12 years now and you are the frist person to contact me. Welcome Home!
When I went aboard the Hunley, I had actually traded stations with a guy named Pease who wanted my original station in R.I. because he lived there.
Just before my transfer to the Orion, I met one of our classmates on board the Simon Lake (now I can't remember the name of our classmate).
I noticed in one of your earlier posts you mentioned a "Scotty". I remember a Scotty in our class who lived in CA. Any Relation?
Good to hear from you.
Michael A Murray You and I were in the same Patternmaker Class. I also can't remember the chiefs name, He was a Great Instructor. I went to the east coast upon graduating to the USS Cadmus AR14. I Traded a 3rd class pm that was on the USS Markab so I could get back to the west coast and that lasted less then a year and they decommissioned her. I got sent too the USS Proteus AS 19 in Guam I was aboard her for 2 years and got transferred to the USS Samual Gompers and was there for about 2 months before I transferred back to the Proteus in Guam. Approx 6 months later The USS Huntley relieved the proteus and I was aboard her till I got out in Feb. 72 and I stayed on Guam for another year before returning to the USA. Been retired for the last 3 years and I'm loving life !!!!!!!!!!!
I have to take my hat off to you George. Sometimes I wish I stayed in just to build patterns. You did it right.
