I was at NavCommStaPhil from Sep 1969 to Sep 1971. Because of my background as an instructor, graduate of RM B School, the Ops boss, LCDR Triptow assigned me to a training office. I developed classes to review Basic Electronics, Math, etc. I had learned fancy work aboard the USS Strong (DD758) (thanks of BM1 John Motes), so I inherited the "M" gang as well. We tidied up the entrance to the "T" building and the grounds surrounding it.
After the fleetwide exams, I was called into the Ops Boss office and he told me I could go into any division I wanted to go to for doing a good job. I selected TechControl and finished my tour at San Miguel learning the ins and outs of being a Tech Controller. Did go to CommSysTech School at Cheltenham enroute the NavFac, Argentia, NFLD.
San Miguel was a great duty station. I had been stationed with another RM1, Dan Mathews in TacRon 11. We started riding motorcycles and then, racing them on the base. We then got a CTCM, Bruce Bowden and others, and soon had about 25 racers. We also ran at the beach on a flat track. Raced with Filipos in San Marelleno. What a great duty station...
Rich Steiger, CTRSN, NAVCOMSTA SAN MIGUEL. Sept. 1971-Sept 1972. Bravo Section Skedders. Chief Cooper and the gang. Will never forget the Crossroads. Also hung out and shared a cube with some great radiomen.
I loved this duty station (1976-78)!
Stationed at the "Fort" From November 1976 until May 1978. Assigned to the Military Personnel Office. Great bunch of sailors at that duty station.
