  I left the Navy as an AE1 in 1982 to go to school.  I was stationed at GITMO, VA-85, NAS Sigonella, and NAS Oceana.  The Navy provided me with a wife, two kids, a house and an education (God bless the GI Bill).  Life has been good, but I still cherish my time in the Nav and my old shipmates.

  Often said that the 1st. class is the core of a ship. Do you have any defining First Class moment?  One that comes to my mind:  As a CT I have limited shipboard experience.  While aboard the USS Boston in the Golf of Tonkin while on Gunfire Support, my assignment was, "First Class Mess :)!"  On of the mounts was above us so the powder lift ran through the mess.  I did not notice any thing with a fellow PO grabbed the phone and started sounding the alarm, a bag was dragging or crossways in the lift!"  About two minutes later he sat down and finished his coffee, "Damn, that could have blown!"  Thank you brother First Class!

     I figure if Dan Gallery's Fatso Gionini can retire from the Nav as a BM1, then I needn't feel bad about it.

  Just a little information about my career. After "A" School, I had the pleasure of being assigned to the USS Dewey (DLG-14 / DDG-45). A real fighting ship. After that tour I was sent to NAS Norfolk, Va.Then the Navy saw a place for me at USNH Okinawa,Japan. Returning back to the states I ended up in Pax.River,Md. I then tried the Seabee side of the Navy in NMCB-62. There was my first expoure to the world of First Class Associations. I Decommed the Battalion and went to the USS Cochrane (DDG-21). There I rode her for  few years and Decommed. her. Left to go across the pier to the USS Blue Ridge (LCC-19). I had the pleasure of taking her to war (Desert Shield/Storm). When time to retire came around I was at NAS Dallas, Tx. No problems on my career I had a great time and saw the World. I saw the Fleet side, the Seabee side and the Air Dale side.

   Hello fellow Shipmates. I'm Jim Slayton MS1,USN,RET. I was in from 74 to 94. I was stationed on ships on both coast, so I got to see the world. Became 100% Service Connected Disabled six months after I retired.

  I retired as a AD1 in 1989 on the "INDY". Brought her out of SLEP and with my guys we set up the Jet Shop. Was an instructor at NAMTRADET  1038 for the 18's, a recruiter in West Allis, Wi, VA-85 with A6E's, VA-195 with A7E's, P3's with VP-31, and VFA-136 with F/A-18's. Got to take my son's on a 10 day "Tiger Cruise" when onboard the "Indy" the fellow 1st class took my sons all over ship.  My boys still talk about the fun they had.

  Any room for another snipe in here? I'm a retired EN1 and didn't get alot of chances to get to the 1st Class Mess. Served onboard USS Forrestal, USS John L. Hall and USS DeWert.

  Glad to see the tradition of the First Class Association still lives on, glad to be a part of it. I'm a retired PC1 (Postal Clerk) now were obsolete, hope the new rate will get to advance better than we did.
