  • I was a member of LCU DIVISION 13 from late 1961 until 1963. We were at Christmas Island for operation crossroads nuclear tests on LCU 1494. Some of my best duties in the Navy.
  • ACU-1 was my first duty station out of boot camp in August 1970. Brother's duty because my step brother, Steve Helphrey, was already stationed there. First assigned to the LCM Division as a SA non-designated striker, I chipped paint and repainted for several months before applying for an opening in the Supply Department. LT Bill Greiner picked me up as a non-designated SK striker. Sk1 Dale Boyer, SK1 Rubin Trinadad and SKC Bob Condes were the group running the show. I never made it to SK School, but picked up E-4 and E-5 while there and married the daughter of SKC Condes, before re-enlisting and transferring to Naval Security Group, Rota, Spain (Norma and I are celebrating our 42nd anniversary in DEC). I ended up getting out from Active Duty after 8 years, but eventually joined the Naval Reserve for an additional 25 years, retiring as a Supply Corps CDR with 33 years service. ACU-1 was by far the best duty station. Great bunch of guys, all old Navy folks at a time when reaching E-4 really meant something special. Those times were great!

I arrived at Assault Craft Div 11 Sept 1966 which later became ACU1. First deployment was to Yokosuka Japan in 66 then Vietnam in March of 68. I cant remember for sure my boat number---either 1475 or 1500-we also had 2 mike 8 boats in the detachment. We ran supplies from Danang to the Cua Viet river up by the DMZ.......at best, it was a miserable and terrifying experience.

  • I was TAD to the Medical Department for a short time in 1980 waiting on the Truxtun to return from West Pac. Was a very interesting time, got to a couple of things that I never saw before.

  • LCM 8 engineer from 70 to late 75. 3 WestPac floats (VN) with other LCMS and a LCU. On LSDs, LPDs, and LSTs (deck loaded). Also part of the unit trouble shooting team, and surf salvage boat coxswain (first EN to get coxswain badge).
    Go amphibs! Loved it!
